1: In
the beginning
God created the
heaven and the earth.
2: (I.) And the earth
was
without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3: And God said, Let there be light: and there
was light.
4: And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5: And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the
first day.
6: (II.) And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7: And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8: And God called the firmament Heaven. And the
evening and the morning were the
second day.
9: (III.) And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10: And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11: And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12: And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself,
after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13: And the evening and the morning were the
third day.
14: (IV.) And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for
signs, and for
seasons, and for
days, and
years:
15: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16: And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the
lesser light to rule the night:
he made the stars also.
17: And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18: And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19: And the evening and the morning were the
fourth day.
20: (V.) And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21: And God created great whales, and every living
creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly,
after their kind, and every winged fowl
after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22: And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23: And the evening and the morning were the
fifth day.
24: (VI.) And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth
after his kind: and it was so.
25: And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle
after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth
after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26: And God said, Let us
make man
in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28: And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29: And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30: And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31: And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the
sixth day.
1. In the beginning The world that then existed. Where a vast majority of today's fossil remains originated, such as dinosaurs. Dinosaurs not created during the following six days of creation else there would be some today saved through Noah's flood.
the The word "the" should be rendered in italics because it is not there. In Hebrew it is read "In beginning".
Cp.
II Tim 1:9.
God = Heb. H430 אלהים 'ĕlôhı̂ym God, pl. (A Faithful Version).
See
Gen. 1:26;
3:22;
11:7;
Isa. 6:8.
heaven = "Heavens" in Heb. always pl.
1st Heaven = the air around the Earth
2nd Heaven = outer space
3rd Heaven = Heaven
2. And the earth Between v.1 and v.2, an undetermined amount of time elapsed.
was = became or came to pass. Denotes a condition different than a former condition, as in
Gen. 19:26.
See
Gen. 2:7;
4:3.
without form = to lie waste (formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness).
Earth was not created tohu va bohu (Heb.; i.e. desolate and empty, an indistinguishable ruin), but became that way. We are not told the reasons how, when, why, or the length of time it lasted, but geology and history prove the vast time span between Gen. 1:1 - 1:2.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (1 Cor. 14:33 - KJV)
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain (tohû, same word as in Ge. 1:2), he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. (Isa. 45:18 - KJV)
The Earth became, not created, that way.
3. be light = become light, as in v.2. Light not located till the 4th day.
was = became, as in v.2.
4. good = beautiful.
Each of the days work are called "good." Second day is not because nothing was created. Only division on the 2nd day.
See
Eccl. 3:11.
5. evening...morning This is stated for a full day. The beginning and ending of anything is put for the whole of it. Here, God establishes the days to begin and end at sunset, for sunset starts the evening. This is supported throughout all of the Bible.

first day = day one.
In summary, God put the earth into its current rotation speed, giving us our 24 hr. days.
The word "day" may refer to a prolonged period when used without any qualifying words. But when qualified with a numeral (cardinal or ordinal) it is defined and limited by it to a day of 24 hours. It is further limited here by its boundaries "evening and morning", as well as by the 7th day.
See
Exo. 20:9, 11 &
The Companion Bible Appendix #11.
6. firmament = Heb. H7549 רקיע râqı̂ya‛ expanse (A Faithful Version).
8. Heaven = Heb. H8064 שׁמה שׁמים shâmayim shâmeh heavens (high, lofty) (A Faithful Version). The expanse above the earth we call the sky (where the clouds move) and space (where the stars and planets reside).
second day = day two.
In summary, God, after causing the earth to spin on day one at it current rate, established our current gravity, separating the waters from the sky and the land.
9. Heaven = heavens.
11. after his kind = after its kind. Occurs 10 times in this chapter, signifying ordinal perfection. See The Companion Bible Appendix #10.. Evolution cannot answer this issue.
13. third day = day three.
In summary, God gathered the waters together on the earth and exposed the land, then created the vegetation.
14. lights = Heb. H3974 מארה מאורה מאר מאור mâ'ôr mâ'ôr me'ôrâh me'ôrâh lightholders or luminaries (A Faithful Version).
Note the fact that light was already established for the earth from day one.
Same word in
Exo. 25:6;
27:20;
35:14; &c.
signs Things to come.
See
Jer. 10:2.
seasons Appointed times. Occurs three more times in Gen. in reference to Isaac:
Gen. 17:21;
18:14;
21:2.
God set the stars and seasons of the earth for His appointed times, to instruct us and let us know. Everything God does is according to His set time.
See Lev. 23.
days To establish the beginning and ending of a day according to God's standard, i.e. from sunset to sunset.
This is established throughout the entirety of the Bible. God does not reckon the days from midnight to midnight.
years For the establishing of one year to the next.
16. greater light = i.e. the sun.
The sun divides the days into light and dark portions, though the days begin and end at sunset. Note the fact that each creation day ends with the statment 'the evening and the morning,' showing that the night portion starts the beginning of the day.
lesser light = i.e. the moon.
The moon is used by God to divide the months throughout the year. You can see this in the Calculated Hebrew Calendar.
he made the stars also = God had made the stars also - AFV.
It is often concluded (and believed) that God created the Earth and the visible universe in six days. Facts show this is not the case. Astronomy
has calculated the furthest distance of stars from our vantage point of the Earth to be billions of light-years away. As the speed of light illustrates, Genesis 1 till our
present time is vastly short of the time needed for the light of those distant stars to reach us. If God created those stars on this same day in Genesis, they would not be
visible to us now. To see them, God would have to have caused their light to be billions of light-years already in transit, including the history the light reveals. God did
create the stars (and the universe), as Genesis 1:16 declares, just that their creation was not on this day.
19. fourth day = day four.
In summary, God established the luminaries in space to be in their proper place for to giving of light to the earth and establishing His appointed times.
20. that hath = Heb. H5315 נפשׁ nephesh soul (A Faithful Version). See The Companion Bible Appendix #13.
21. whales = H8577 תּנּים תּנּין tannı̂yn tannı̂ym sea-creatures, or sea-animals (A Faithful Version).
creature = Heb. H5315 נפשׁ nephesh soul (A Faithful Version). See The Companion Bible Appendix #13.
after their kind See v.11.
after his kind = after its kind. See v.11.
23. fifth day = day five.
In summary, God created the sea-creatures and the fowl of the earth that fly in the air.
24. after his kind = after their kind. See v.11.
after his kind = after its kind. See v.11.
25. after his kind = after their kind. See v.11.
after their kind See v.11.
26. Let us = The two Elohim known as God the Father and Jesus Christ. Both are alluded to in
Dan. 7:13, but the answer as to the identity of 'us' is not given till John 17.
See note on v.1.
make man The purpose stated here. The act is detailed in Gen. 2:7, 21-22
in our image, after our likeness:The Holy Spirit is the power of God, not the third person of a trinity as supposed. Both God the Father and Jesus Christ have physical attributes described to Them throughout the Bible that shows we are made after Their image and likeness. No such physical human attributes are given of the Holy Spirit. In addition, the Holy Spirit is not included in the introduction of numerous New Testament writings, as would be assummed if a trinity was being addressed.

27. Summation of the creation of man, both male and female. Details not given till Gen. 2:7, 21-22. God created Adam and Eve with a fully developed language, rational thought, basic skills, and most importantly...choice.
28. have dominion "...But now we see not yet all things put under him."
Cp.
Ps. 8;
Heb 2:6-8.
29. for meat = Heb. H402 אכלה 'ôklâh for food (A Faithful Version). Flesh was not given for food till after the flood. Gen. 9:3.
31. sixth day = day six.
In summary, God created all land animals and, lastly, the first man and woman.
