Genesis 3

Chapters:

1:   Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2:   And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3:   But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4:   And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5:   For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6:   And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7:   And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked;

and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8:   And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9:   And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10:   And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11:   And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12:   And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13:   And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14:   And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15:   And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16:   Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17:   And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18:   Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19:   In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20:   And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21:   Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22:   And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23:   Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24:   So he drove out the man;

and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

1. serpent = Heb. Nachash, a shining one.
Lucifer ( Isa. 14:12).
Satan ( Lk. 10:18).
Serpent ( 2 Cor. 11:3).
Dragon / old serpent ( Rev. 12:9; 20:2).
Transformed as angel of light ( 2 Cor. 11:14).
The length of time from the creation of Adam and Eve until God allowed Satan to enter into the Garden is not known.

See The Companion Bible Appendix #19.

beast = creature.

woman = i.e. Eve.

Yea, hath God said = "Is it true that God has said" or "Can it be that God has said".

2. Scripture comparison:

  • (Gen. 2:16) LORD God, "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:"
  • (Gen. 3:2) Eve, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:"

3. Scripture comparison:

  • (Gen. 2:17) LORD God, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
  • (Gen. 3:3) Eve, "But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die."

neither shall ye touch it Not quoted directly from God nor directly referenced anywhere in the Bible that this command was given. This has to be an additional command God gave to Adam and Eve, not an added command by Eve herself. If this was added by Eve, one could say that Eve lying is the first sin. Caution Most probrably commanded by God, for the touching of it would lead to temptation and onto sin. Caution The error of Judaism -- the adding in of man-made laws and commands to create a hedge around God's commandments in order to not violate them.

4. Ye shall not surely die: "In dying, you shall not surely die!" - (AFV).

"This has become the foundation of Spiritism and Traditional belief as to death."

- The Companion Bible

The origination of the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. The first lie Satan told Eve is the same lie all religions believe in. God states that the one that sins and does not repent shall surely die [the second death (resulting in nonexistence)].
Cp. Jn. 3:16 and Biblical Proofs III.i, V.i and V.ii.

5. For God...good and evil. Satan's method: the giving of a quick benefit in return for sin. Here, Satan is giving Adam and Eve a short-cut. "in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods".
Cp. to Ps. 82:6 and Jn. 10:34.

ye shall be as gods = you shall be like God (Heb. Elohim).
The lie of the immanence of God in man. God's plan for mankind is for us to be His children, to eventually be like God (Spirit) and appear as He is ( 1 Jn. 3:2), but only through love, faith and obedience in His Way.

knowing = deciding. i.e. to ascertain by observing and experimenting.
They would not merely know, but they could decide for themselves.

6. good for food "The lust of the flesh".

See 1 Jn. 2:16.

pleasant to the eyes "The lust of the eyes".
See 1 Jn. 2:16.

she took By Satan tempting Eve, she broke the following Commandments of God:

  • Commandment 5 (She did not honor God, her Father.)
  • Commandment 8 (She stole that which is God's)
  • Commandment 10 (She coveted that which was not hers).
Cp. Rom. 5:13.

gave also unto her husband with her Showing Adam was there with her. Though Eve was deceived, Adam was not, therefore, his sin was greater.
See 1 Tim. 2:14.

7. knew This was nothing new to Adam and Eve, just that it now carried new meaning to them, which describes their actions.

8. God first intended to tabernacle with His creation in the Garden of Eden. The Bible begins with God tabernacling with His creation and ends with the same. The Garden lasted till the flood of Noah, though mankind was cut off from entering into it.

voice = sound.

hid themselves Sin separates us from God, even to the point we do not even seek Him.
Cp. Gen. 4:14; Jer. 23:24; Job 31:33; Eph. 2:13.

9. called No reason for God (the Elohim we know as Jesus Christ) to not know the location of Adam, but God can limit Himself to mankind if He so chooses (like adults limit themselves to infants and toddlers). God obviously limited His glory when around Adam and Eve just as He had when interacting with Abraham and other patriarchs.
See Exo. 33:18-23.

10. 1 Jn. 3:20.

12. The woman No ownership. Typical of fallen man to hide one's sin and blame others.
Cp. Job 31:33; hence Deut. 13:6.

thou gavest Implying God is to blame as well.

13. The serpent See notes on v.1 and v.12.

beguiled = deceived.
Cp. 2 Cor. 11:3, 14.

Cp. Lk. 1:31, 34-35; 2:6-7, 11; 1 Tim. 2:14-15.

to = toward.

rule over thee man is designated to be the head, or leader, of the two (in love), just as Christ is the head of the church.
See 1 Cor. 11; Eph. 5:21-33.
