Annual Holy Day Differences

Below is a simple summary list of the biblical Holy Days compared to other sources, such as biblical commentaries, Jewish groups, and the beliefs of mainstream Christianity. A shift in the Holy Day listing after the Feast of Unleavened Bread becomes apparent (not unlike the ten commandment listing between Catholics and Christians).

Though there are many, this summary listing covers only a few discrepancies. The calendar dates these Holy Days are observed can become another list of ideological differences that would take another study. For instance, a few of the Holy Days, commemorated by some groups, are kept longer than the Bible prescription. Another list of differences can include how they are observed, such as added traditions and understandings.

#1 Passover

The date of the Passover on the 14th is correct, though the timing of the Passover is often assumed to occure in the afternoon or close to the end of the day. The Hebrew Scriptures prove that it is the beginning of the 14th day when sunset starts the day. The worldview, as well as Judaism, confuses the issue with tradition. (To study on the arguments of this topic and what the Bible actually says, please read and study The Christian Passover.)

#3 First Fruits

What the world views as the holy day of First Fruits (the waving of the 1st sheaf of the harvest during the Feast of Unleavened Bread), it is often cited as a feast day. Though the event and occasion are very significant to God's salvational plan, there are some things to consider:

  • Some consider this day to be on Nisan 16, the day after the 1st High Sabbath (1st day of Unleavened Bread). This scenario is not always the case. The "next day after the Sabbath" (Leviticus 23:11) refers to the weekly Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, not the first High Sabbath specifically. The date potentially can fall anywhere during the Feast of Unleavened Bread as long as it meets the criteria of being after the weekly Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
  • The event is always on the 1st day of the week [Sunday].
  • The day is not a high Sabbath day (though it may fall on the 1st day of Unleavened Bread, which is).
  • The event is linked to the keeping of Pentecost because it is when the count begins.
  • Jesus Christ, the first fruit resurrected to eternal life, is the premier sheaf waved on this day. Those resurrected on Pentecost will be the first fruits of the first resurrection when Christ returns. This understanding, along with the counting of weeks, links the wave sheaf event to Pentecost.
  • It is unusual to have a "Feast within a Feast." Also, what day takes precedence when it falls on the 1st Day of Unleavened Bread?

#3 Pentecost

#4 Pentecost

Some place this Holy Day on Sivan 6, a specified date that can fall anywhere on the week. The Scriptures expressly command it to be counted. If Pentecost is a specified date, God would state it as all the other Holy Days. This Holy Day should always be on a Sunday because it is the 50th count from the Wave Sheaf offering day (inclusive counting). Seven weeks times seven ends on a weekly Sabbath, or seven full weeks. The 50th day (Sunday) is after the 49th day (Saturday), so Pentecost is always on a Sunday.

#6 Feast of Tabernacles

#7 Feast of Tabernacles

The Feast of Tabernacles is only seven days, although staying in booths on the eighth day is customary because it follows the Feast immediately. What is lost is the understanding of the meaning of the eighth day, for it is separate from the Feast of Tabernacles. Often, the eighth day is joined with the Feast or ignored altogether.

#7 Last Great Day

The meaning of the eighth day and its significance in God's plan is a cause for much celebration. The selection of this day outside of the Feast of Tabernacles and immediately after it has purpose and meaning. Please refer to the summary above on this topic for more information.
